What is the free Box Equations Quiz?

The Box Equation Quiz is a free web app for practicing original missing-number math problems in a 4-choice quiz format.

Students look at equations that use the box symbol, such as 7 + □ = 15 or □ × 6 = 42, and learn how inverse operations help find the missing number without jumping straight to a rule.

Original practice for grades 2 to 5

The course lineup is designed as an original learning structure for elementary review. It is not copied from textbooks, workbooks, entrance exams, worksheets, or other published materials.

The problems, options, hints, diagrams, and number settings are generated independently for this app.

Helpful dynamic hints

Hints change to match the current question. They show the related inverse operation, part-whole model, multiplication/division model, or simple tape-style diagram using original SVG drawings.

My Page stores challenge history, best records, and often missed questions, making the app useful for repeated review.

Why practice with a box symbol?

The box symbol helps children think, “What number would make this statement true?” before they meet letters such as x. That habit supports later work with formulas, word problems, and equations.

Because every question is short and answered by choosing one of four options, it is easy to use for a few minutes of review at home, as a warm-up in class, or as a quick check after learning a calculation rule.

Designed to make the thinking visible

Instead of only saying “use the opposite operation,” the hints show why the opposite operation works. Addition and subtraction use a part-whole model, multiplication and division use equal groups, and two-step expressions show the path for working backward.

The app is also useful when a child can calculate but hesitates over where the box belongs. Seeing the same idea through numbers, stories, and diagrams helps connect calculation practice with reading the situation.
